Skanska Secures $418M in Education Construction Projects

Skanska is expanding its work in the education sector with a series of school and university construction projects worth a combined $418 million.

The Sweden-based construction company recently announced three contracts totaling $351 million. It has also started the second phase of a major high school expansion in Washington state, adding another $67.1 million to its education project portfolio.

The projects include a new university theater, a high school in Washington and the replacement of an existing school in the western United States.

University of Mary Washington project valued at $163 million

Skanska has signed a $163 million contract with the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia, to build a new theater and renovate existing fine arts facilities.

The project includes a multistory theater with 293 seats and approximately 68,230 square feet of space. Skanska will also renovate about 82,000 square feet of existing academic buildings and construct an additional 8,950 square feet.

The work covers site development, infrastructure, building construction and interior finishes. Construction is underway, with completion expected in February 2030.

New Washington high school to serve 1,600 students

In Renton, Washington, Skanska has secured a $110 million contract from the Renton School District to build a new three-story high school.

The approximately 350,000-square-foot facility will accommodate up to 1,600 students. Planned spaces include classrooms, career and technical education facilities, health services, a library, cafeteria, gymnasiums and community areas. The project will also include lighted sports fields.

Work has started, and the school is expected to be completed in fall 2029.

Skanska has also signed a $78 million contract amendment with an existing client for a separate school replacement project in the western United States. The new building will be constructed at the same location as the current school. Construction is underway, with completion expected in 2029. The client has not been publicly identified.

Sumner High School expansion moves into Phase 2

Skanska has also begun the second phase of the Sumner High School campus expansion in Washington state.

The multiyear project is part of a wider school district improvement program supported by a $737 million bond measure approved by local voters in 2024. The overall Sumner High School expansion has been reported at approximately $412 million.

Phase 2 is valued at $67.1 million and will add a three-story building covering about 103,000 square feet. The facility will include approximately 50 classrooms, along with specialized spaces for career and technical education.

Planned facilities include a greenhouse, robotics and aerospace manufacturing areas, computer-aided design and digital design classrooms, early learning spaces, a culinary arts kitchen and childcare facilities.

The second phase is expected to finish in fall 2028. A final phase will add a performing arts center, gymnasium, swimming pool, music rooms and athletic fields.

The first phase included three central campus buildings, a library, a 12,000-square-foot common area and technology upgrades.

Education construction remains a key part of Skanska’s work

The latest contracts show Skanska’s continued involvement in education construction, from university facilities to large public schools.

The projects will add teaching space, specialized learning environments and campus facilities designed to meet the needs of students and staff. Their combined value also gives Skanska a significant pipeline of education work extending into 2028, 2029 and 2030.
