The Airfield Asphalt Pavement Technology Program (AAPTP) will host two virtual webinars in October focused on balanced mix design and cracking performance in airfield asphalt pavements.
The sessions will give asphalt industry professionals an opportunity to learn about recent research and how different types of cracking can be evaluated during the pavement mixture design process.

First Webinar to Cover Low-Temperature Cracking
The first session, “Balanced Mix Design for Airfield Pavements: Low-Temperature Cracking Prediction,” will take place on Oct. 6.
The webinar will present findings from an AAPTP study focused on predicting low-temperature cracking in asphalt mixtures used for airfield pavements.
Speakers will include Imad Al-Qadi of the University of Illinois, Eshan Dave of the University of New Hampshire and Brett Williams of the National Asphalt Pavement Association.
The discussion will focus on how asphalt mixtures respond to low temperatures and how cracking potential can be evaluated as part of a balanced mix design approach.
Second Session Will Focus on Service-Temperature Cracking
The second webinar is scheduled for Oct. 13.
Titled “Balanced Mix Design for Airfield Pavements: Service-Temperature Cracking Potential,” the session will examine the causes of load-related cracking in airfield asphalt pavements.
Al-Qadi and Williams will be joined by Akash Bajaj of the University of Illinois and Hasan Ozer of Arizona State University.
The speakers will discuss why understanding cracking potential is an important part of balanced mix design and how pavement mixtures can be evaluated under service-temperature conditions.
Continued Education for Asphalt Professionals
The two October sessions are part of AAPTP’s ongoing educational program for professionals involved in airfield pavement design, construction and maintenance.
By focusing on low-temperature and service-temperature cracking, the webinars aim to provide industry professionals with a better understanding of how mixture design can influence pavement performance.
The sessions will also highlight research that could help improve the durability and long-term performance of asphalt airfield pavements.
