Skanska Completes First Phase of $400 Million Emergency Department Expansion in Miami

MIAMI, Fla. — Skanska USA has completed the first phase of a major $400 million expansion and renovation project at Jackson Memorial Hospital, marking a significant milestone in efforts to modernize one of South Florida’s busiest emergency care facilities.

The newly completed phase adds a 178,000-square-foot emergency department building, more than doubling the size of the hospital’s previous emergency room. The expansion is designed to improve patient capacity, streamline emergency services, and support the growing healthcare needs of the Miami community.

The new facility features more than 60 general examination rooms, along with four resuscitation rooms, six triage rooms, and 12 fast-track treatment rooms for patients with less critical conditions.

A dedicated second floor has also been built to support patient care, offering 50 observation rooms and seven acute care rooms for individuals requiring additional monitoring and treatment.

To improve convenience and speed of care, the new emergency department includes an onsite pharmacy and a comprehensive radiology suite equipped with MRI, CT, X-ray, and ultrasound imaging services.

Construction of the new facility required the demolition of two existing buildings to make room for the expansion. Skanska was previously awarded a $90 million contract in 2023 to complete the demolition and site preparation work before construction began.

Work will now move into the second phase of the project, which focuses on renovating and expanding the hospital’s existing 45,000-square-foot emergency department. Once completed, this phase will add 121 adult emergency treatment rooms, dedicated behavioral health treatment bays, and 30 pediatric emergency rooms.

Construction on the second phase is already underway and is expected to be completed in 2027.

A third and final phase is also planned. According to Jackson Health System, it will include the addition of a new third floor that will provide more clinical space while improving access to the hospital’s helipad for emergency patient transport.

The project reflects continued investment in healthcare infrastructure across the United States. Healthcare facilities remain one of the strongest sectors in nonresidential construction, alongside data centers, as demand for modern medical facilities continues to grow.

The Jackson Memorial Hospital expansion is one of several major healthcare projects Skanska has advanced this year. Earlier in 2026, the contractor celebrated the structural topping out of the $435 million Lee Health Fort Myers campus in Florida and completed construction of a 53,000-square-foot cancer center in Redmond, Oregon.

As construction progresses through the remaining phases, the expanded emergency department is expected to significantly increase the hospital’s ability to provide faster, more efficient care for patients across South Florida.
